Check out Battlestar Galactica concept art by  Guy Hendrix Dyas!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the unmade Battlestar Galactica (2001) movie.

This week's post was requested by Jim Chlubna who asked for "Battlestar Galactica, Tom DeSanto/ Bryan Singer" concept art.

Back in 2000, Bryan Singer set out to remake the classic 70's sci-fi show Battlestar Galacticafor Fox as a mini-series. Singer was very passionate about the show and he brought on Guy Hendrix Dyas, who eventually worked with him on X2, to work on the pilot. The concept was that it would continue the storyline of the first series but set it 25 years later featuring some of the original cast.

Guy Hendrix Dyas is a professional production designer who's worked on Hollywood movies like X2 (2012) Inception (2010) and Superman Returns (2006).

Read on to find out why was the project shut down and what it would have been like.

"I was introduced to Bryan by producers, Tom DeSanto and David Gorder and I ended up drawing pretty much the entire ‘look’ for the show," Dyas told Junsui Films, "Like me, Bryan is a strong believer in respecting what has gone before and I think it was that aspect of my designs which impressed and pleased him most."

The project was green-lit in April 2001 and the show was developing nicely. They began building sets and costumes when the World Trade Center attack happened on September 11th. Production delays led to Bryan Singer leaving the project to work on X2.The studio decided the concept was "too close to home" and the production was shut down. Screenwriter Ronald D. Moore and producer David Eick developed a remake (or "reimagining") of the show for the Sc-Fi channel. It was a hit though they still used some of Dyas' original designs including a "half built Viper plane."

Universal is developing a movie that would be set between the original series and the remake, but without Bryan Singer.
