David MacLean Talks About Blazing ARROW\THE FLASH Cross-Over Storyboards

Check out Arrow storyboards by David MacLean!

Last week executive producer Marc Guggenheim tweeted several storyboards from the upcoming Arrow\Flash crossover episodes titled "Flash vs. Arrow" and "The Brave and the Bold". In one of them we see Flash holding a boomerang, which is a reference to the long-time Flash villain known as "Captain Boomerang."

When talking about the upcoming crossover episode he told Collider, "Nick Tarabay plays Boomerang/Digger Harkness, and he’s amazing.  And that weapon is a whole new visual language in the show, and a whole new visual language for our stunt guys to work with."

One of the storyboard artists on Arrow is David MacLean and he kindly told me a little bit about working on the show. MacLean is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like X2 (2003), The Core (2003) and Caprica (2010).

So, I asked him what it's like working on Arrow and he told me, "While I like story boarding in general I like Arrow in particular. Somehow it's easier to get involved down to the bones of a scene.  The Stunt department has a lot to do with this, as does the Art Department and...well the culture here in general. If you have something to add often you can, or at least be forgiven for a dumb idea.  It's a team sport, and playing as hard as you can usually feels the best.

"I remember my very first job in the art department about a thousand years ago.  I was feeling overwhelmed, talentless, and pretty much unable to fool the bosses much longer.  A driver walked by, saw me drawing and said, 'You have the  best job on the show.' You know, if you make your living with your imagination, that's pretty good stuff.

It is an amazing job. When asked if he was a comic book fan he said, "I'm a huge comic book fan.  Fussy but huge.  I still buy graphic novels and follow various artists. Niel Gamain and Dave McKean opened up some sort of door that I fell through creatively."

Official Arrow Synopsis
"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he's become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel's father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver's own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine. The series stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance."
