See ARROW's New Costume in Concept Art by Andy Poon

Arrow (2014) concept art by Andy Poon

Check out Arrow concept art by Andy Poon!

The Green Arrow costume has been pretty much the same since the show started except for an updated mask last season. But, during a Q&A, actor Stephen Amell said, "Suit upgrade is coming. There is going to be new stuff added to the suit at some point this season." That happened in the season 3 Arrow\The Flash crossover episode "The Brave and the Bold" when his suit gets improvements. Concept artist Andy Poon just updated his site with concept art of the new costume and it's awesome.

Poon is a professional concept artist who's worked on network television shows like Smallville, and Slugterra.

"The strap for the quiver is more like a bandolier now that holds special trick arrow tips. There are flechette holders added to his left arm, lower back and his thighs. Two seams were added at the lower front of jacket which makes it feel abit more like the lines of the abs which we all know Oliver Queen has, but also for the new jacket belt to loop through that holds two side pouches." - Andy Poon

"Now here is the fun one, below is a 'blooper version' which I added a green boxing glove on the bandolier with the other trick arrow tips as a homage to the classic boxing glove arrow. The awesome thing is that they actually figured a really smart way to create the classic boxing glove arrow in one of the episodes in season 3! I wonder if they saw the blooper illustration and got some ideas." - Andy Poon

Here's what the costume has looked like over the seasons

Official Arrow Synopsis
"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he's become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel's father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver's own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine. See What Captain Cold Almost Looked Like in ARROW and THE FLASH Concept Art by John Gallagher and Andy Poon

The Flash (2014) concept art by John Gallagher
Check out Arrow and The Flash concept art by Andy Poon and John Gallagher!

The Flash is a hit and is the highest rated show of The CW Network so rumors started circulating of the inevitable second season order of the show. CW Tampaclaimed that the show was coming back next season, but they recently added the note: "Editors note: An earlier post incorrectly stated that The Flash and Jane The Virgin had been picked up for season 2, when the ratings and critical acclaim earned both shows full orders for their first season."

Two major villains on both Arrow and The Flashare Ras Al Ghul and Leonard Snart (AKA Captain Cold). Recently concept art for both characters have shown up online by Andy Poon and John Gallagher.

Andy Poon and John Gallagher are professional concept illustrators who've worked on major projects like Mockingbird Lane (2012), V (2009) and Arrow (2013).

Ras Al Ghul concept art by Andy Poon

"So here is my concept illustrations of the 'Demon' himself once again working with the fantastic costume designer Maya Mani and her costume department. I did this illustration before they cast the actor Matt Nable. There were rumors that 'The Mummy returns" actor Oded Fehr was on the list and Niam Neeson from the Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight triology is interested, so I tried to gave my Ra's a hybrid of both actors' qualities." - Andy Poon

"Concept piece for Captain Cold with New 52 look for The Flash. We went in a different direction but d*** Wentworth looks bad**s holding the cold gun I had the pleasure of designing. Stay tuned for plenty more Rogues villainy!"- John Gallagher

See Arsenal and Ravanger's New Costume in ARROW Concept Art by Andy Poon

Check out Arrow concept art by Andy Poon!

The new season of Arrow started last week and with it will come a whole new batch of superhero costumes. Concept artist Andy Poon has shown some of his amazing work for Arrow in the past, but there's one costume we won't see for a while: The Atom. In the comics, Atom is a superhero who has the ability to shrink to incredibly small sizes and grow normal again. This season former Superman Returns actor Brandon Routh will be playing Ray Palmer in season 3 of Arrow. In an interview with  The DJ Tanner Show he said he's seen concept art of his superhero costume. Routh said, "It's a totally different suit and I haven't been in it yet, I've only seen drawings. It's a very different character and I really can't say too much about what the suit's going to look like - just that it's very different and I don't believe it has a cape, which doesn't really surprise anybody if you've seen The Atom in the comics." Poon confirmed it on his blog saying, "I can at least now say that yes I worked on it. He said it! The Atom!" When will we see the incredibly shrinking Routh? It's hard to say. When asked if Ray Palmer was going to shrink on Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim told GreenArowTV, "I think anything is possible. My instinct is that if Ray Palmer’s going to shrink, he’ll probably shrink on another show. With The Flash in existence, there’s no real compelling reason for us to do super powers on Arrow. We can bring characters to Flash to have super powers. We have plans for Ray that don’t involve shrinking, but our plans for Ray are actually really cool." So maybe it'll end up being on the Arrow spin-off The Flash.

Till then, let's look at concept art for two characters from Arrow: Arsenal, played by Colton Haynes, and Ravager, played by Summer Glau.

Andy Poon is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget projects like Smallville.

Arsenal
"So the long way was over, here is the concept for Arsenal. Season 3 of Arrow premiered on Wednesday this week and it was full of awesomeness and surprises. Roy finally made his debut as Arsenal in his full fancy outfit. When I say fancy, I mean fancy even Stephen Amell (Arrow) himself has joked about now he has the second coolest in one of his comic con appearances. I'm super happy how this one turns out in person and on screen, costume designer Maya Mani and her team did such an amazing job on it and definitely set a new high bar for the show. Go team Arrow!" - Andy Poon

Ravager
"This design was really fun to do as usual. I had to again do some further research on who she is, what she is like, how she looks to get a better core idea of what elements I must have in order for her to still read as Ravager in the Arrow-verse. The easy part was that Deathstroke has already been established, so she is essentially an extension of him but sleeker and sexier. We decided to have her abit more stealth and subtle than Deathstroke so shes only in black and abit or orange and without the blue. The make is the trickiest part for this character because they actually want to show part of her face unlike Deathstroke, so it naturally goes into a more superhero realm than the realistic side. Summer Glau's face also has a really strong structure, therefore framing her face without making her look too masculine was [a bit] challenging." - Andy Poon

Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.

David MacLean Talks About Blazing ARROW\THE FLASH Cross-Over Storyboards

Check out Arrow storyboards by David MacLean!

Last week executive producer Marc Guggenheim tweeted several storyboards from the upcoming Arrow\Flash crossover episodes titled "Flash vs. Arrow" and "The Brave and the Bold". In one of them we see Flash holding a boomerang, which is a reference to the long-time Flash villain known as "Captain Boomerang."

When talking about the upcoming crossover episode he told Collider, "Nick Tarabay plays Boomerang/Digger Harkness, and he’s amazing.  And that weapon is a whole new visual language in the show, and a whole new visual language for our stunt guys to work with."

One of the storyboard artists on Arrow is David MacLean and he kindly told me a little bit about working on the show. MacLean is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like X2 (2003), The Core (2003) and Caprica (2010).

Click on the images to enlarge.

So, I asked him what it's like working on Arrow and he told me, "While I like story boarding in general I like Arrow in particular. Somehow it's easier to get involved down to the bones of a scene.  The Stunt department has a lot to do with this, as does the Art Department and...well the culture here in general. If you have something to add often you can, or at least be forgiven for a dumb idea.  It's a team sport, and playing as hard as you can usually feels the best.

"I remember my very first job in the art department about a thousand years ago.  I was feeling overwhelmed, talentless, and pretty much unable to fool the bosses much longer.  A driver walked by, saw me drawing and said, 'You have the  best job on the show.' You know, if you make your living with your imagination, that's pretty good stuff.

It is an amazing job. When asked if he was a comic book fan he said, "I'm a huge comic book fan.  Fussy but huge.  I still buy graphic novels and follow various artists. Niel Gamain and Dave McKean opened up some sort of door that I fell through creatively."
