James Gunn had a very specific look he wanted for Guardians of the Galaxy. When guiding the artsists through his vision he created a detailed, nineteen page visual guide that covered everything from where to use the color yellow to Chris Foss paintings. He told Film Divider, "The document was talking about the injection of colour, and being able to use a bright colour palette that, usually people are very afraid of, and to be very bold and brazen in every way. When Alien and Blade Runner came along they made everything very dark, but I loved the pulp colours of the 50s and 60s. I liked the griminess and dirtiness that Alien especially brought in, but I wanted to mix that with the bright colours."

I've yet to see a more perfect example of this mix of dark and light than in concept artist Kev Jenkins portfolio from the film.

Kev Jenkins is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget hits like Thor: The Dark World (2013) Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Superman Returns (2006)

"Before I joined ILM I contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy.  Hired by the production at the beginning of the show I developed images For Morag, Xandar and Knowhere.

"I designed the Knowhere Robot Head and have included the image chosen by Marvel that inspired the direction. I also Designed and worked on the Zbrush sculpt that VFX used in their DMP's using an initial sculpt I did for the concept paintings. After seven months in pre-production I then hired a team and spent three months creating all the concept assets under my direction while I provided lighting studies for VFX to follow.

"Tip of the hat to my old friend Fred Gambino and Chris Cook who joined me designing assets through the summer. Big thanks to all the 70's and 80's book jacket illustrators that inspired me on this show, Chris Foss,  Chris Moore,  Peter Elson and many others." - Kev Jenkins
